Submittable Holiday Card

Goal

Design and illustrate (and later animate) a printed holiday card for Submittable – full of all kinds of wintertime frivolities. Invoke a sense of busy, happy holiday cheer with a patchwork of illustrated scenes.

Role

Illustration, Design, Custom Lettering, Animation

More Info & Credits

Each year, Submittable sends a physical holiday card to clients and customers, and I had the pleasure of creating this one. The card design was then repurposed for social, email, and other digital uses. This repurposing of the design had to be considered from the start.

One Card, Two Card

My intent was for the front of the card to remain the focus, but to also include a relatively detailed card-back. That way, each recipient would get a little surprise if they flipped the card over.

An illustrated holiday card with text reading "However You Celebrate" at the top, and a tightly grouped set of holiday-related scenes. Each with people celebrating holiday activities. The back of the holiday card, with an illustrated pattern of various mugs. Some mugs are comical in nature, such as a star shaped mug.A digital mockup of the illustrated holiday card, showing people participating in holiday activities like skiing and sledding. It also shows the back of the card. The inside of the holiday card with text reading "we wish you the happiest of holiday seasons!" There are small details in the corners of the card.A simple illustration of two hands holding martini glasses that are clinking together in celebration.Illustration of person waving from passenger side of blue sedan with pine tree tied to the car's roof.

Process Sketches

I loved the looseness of the rough sketches, and did my best to keep that feel in the final piece. Who doesn’t love drawing weird little mugs and lumpy, puffy coats?
